Question re: ÖBB 1010.10 at Semmering
Author: tmrail

I'm in Austria for the first time this week, and was able to get away from Vienna on Saturday, May 27, for a quick trip to Semmering. While I was there, at shortly after 11:00 A.M., a train arrived that appeared to be some kind of hikers' special. It was powered by the very clean, green ÖBB 1010.10, and at least a couple of hundred people disembarked from the train's heritage passenger cars before the train departed toward Murrzuschlag. Can anyone tell me more about this train -- was it a one-time special or a regular operation, and what else does that nice-looking locomotive do for ÖBB?

Thanks.

Tom Murray

You were very lucky to have seen this train. It was a special run. The OeBB had 20 class 1010 locomotives that were built in 1955. They were withdrawn from regular service about 15 years ago. At the time they were retired, they were painted in a modern red scheme. This one is part of the historical collection and has been painted back into it's original green.
