Any heritage RRs or museums in S.France-Spain?
Author: Stottman

I am an American living in Germany; In a couple weeks, we are taking a three week roadtrip to Almeria, Spain via Southern France.

Taking our time, stopping in Arles, Carsconne, and Foix in France, Andorra, before moving on to Spain. In Spain we are staying in Almeria, then heading north through Madrid, then driving back through Western France.

Staying out of the big cities as much as possible, but was wondering if anyone knew of any RR musuems to see along the way? I know in Almeria, Spain they filmed allot of Spaghetti Westerns with RR equipment. The old filming locations is one of the reasons to go there, and I have two 3 year olds to try to entertain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a list of all the heritage railways in France.

Last year we went to the Chemin de fer touristique du Haut-Quercy near St Denis du Martel in SW FRance.

I concur with Montgomery. The French National Museum in Mulhouse is an excellent location to visit and plan a little time to spend touring their exhibits. I visited there in 2002 with one of my German friends and then we had dinner in Strasbourg France before returning back to his house in Freiburg Germany.

The Railway Museum of Catalonia is located in Vilanova i la Geltru, along the coast west of Barcelona. Located in a former roundhouse/shop facility, they display over 20 steam locomotives as well as electrics and diesels. We spent a very pleasant afternoon there in April. Check the hours on their website, as they often close mid-afternoon.

Thanks for the tips. Probably going to hit the Spanish train museum.

The yellow train ride through the mountains looks neat, but the schedule sucks and all the non train nut reviews point to it being a possible disappointment especially when two three year olds.
