European Railroad Discussion > Superpower SaturdayDate: 09/18/17 14:29 Superpower Saturday Author: 86235 Last weekend the Welsh Highland Railway held their annual Superpower event. Extra trains, including freights and a mixed train, all three NGG16 Beyer Garratts in action, plus Ffestiniog Double Fairlie 'Earl of Merioneth'. The workshops at Dinas were open, giving visitors the chance to catch up on progress rebuilding NGG16 Garratt no.130 and the NG15 'Kalahari' 2-8-2. There was also much ballyhoo about the Snowdonia National Park being granted dark sky status, with after dark events celebrating the fact. I drove up on Saturday morning and just spent the day there. It ended rather unusually, thanks to a loco failure - Garratt no.87 being the offender.
1: Earl of Merioneth on Ffestiniog Railway coaching stock approaching Nantmor on the 09:40 Porthmadog to Caernarfon 2: NGG16 no.143 on the 10:00 service train from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, with a typical off season consist - first class observation car on the rear, food preparation car, six second class cars and a semi-open (the second car) 3: Autumn has definitely arrived in Snowdonia Date: 09/18/17 14:36 Re: Superpower Saturday Author: 86235 4: Garratt 87, which later disgraced itself, on the 12:25 Caernarfon to Porthmadog mixed train
5: A close up of Garratt 138, a youngster - not yet 60 years old. 138 is on the 14:15 Caernarfon to Porthmadog. It's approaching the summit station at Rhyd Ddu (pronounced Rid Thee) where it is supposed to pass the 14:10 ex-Porthmadog. But it didn't. So I follow it down to Beddgelert, where it waited....and waited 6: And this is what it was waiting for, running almost an hour late the 14:10 emerges from Goat Tunnel behind Manning Wardle replica 2-6-2T 'Lyd" and Funkey 'Vale of Ffestiniog', a steam / diesel combination. made for a good picture and a good end to the day. The NGG16 Garratts are big power for the 2' gauge and all three were in action, along with Ffestiniog power - the double Fairlie. It's just a title for a weekend in which extra trains are run.
