European Railroad Discussion > Of mists, mellow fruitfulness and leaves on the line.Date: 10/21/17 10:43 Of mists, mellow fruitfulness and leaves on the line. Author: 86235 It's that time of year again when Network Rail and their contractors go to work clearing the RoW of leaves and other autumnal junk. Here in South Wales there are two RHTT (Railhead Treatment Trains) in operation; DBC out of Bristol Barton Hill and Colas out of Gloucester Horton Road. The two cross in Hereford, not literally as the DBC train is a morning operation whilst Colas passes through in the afternoon.
1: Last Monday brought (former) hurricane Ophelia to our shores, and those of the Irish Republic. The winds from Ophelia picked up dust from the Sahara and smoke particles from wild fires in Northern Portugal, turning the sky a very strange colour. I was in Worcestershire on the Birmingham to Bristol mainline to shoot the Gloucester Horton Road to Worcester Shrub Hill RHTT, the dark sky was making me nervous (it was supposed to be bright) but I needn't have worried, the sky cleared a few minutes before the train appeared. 66846 and 66848 are the power. 2: The RHTT wasn't the only reason I drove 60 miles, the Corby to Margam empty steel was another reason. 3: Tuesday was a much more benign day, this is the Bristol Barton Hill RHTT set passing Llanvihangel Crucorney mid morning on its way back to Bristol. It covers the Welsh Valley lines overnight, then the Marches Line as far as Moreton on Lugg before laying up in Hereford (for breakfast?), returning to Bristol just after 09:00 Date: 10/21/17 10:50 Re: Of mists, mellow fruitfulness and leaves on the line. Author: 86235 4: Later in the day I ventured over towards Great Malvern for the Colas RHTT approaching Ledbury Tunnel
5: On Wednesday I paid my first visit to London since moving in March. I had an appointment in the morning but spent a couple of hours before my train home at Camden Road. The weather was awful but I managed to get a shot of GBRf 66720 a loco which has constantly eluded me. Here it is on the Broxbourne based RHTT which also covers lines in and around North and North East London. The livery of 66720 was designed by the children at the school of one of the company's drivers. The other reason I hung around on Camden Road was for the passage of D9002 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry a preserved class 55 Deltic which was towing National Railway Museum's D6700 class 37. they were both on their way to Alton for a gala on the Mid Hants. 6: Final RHTT was the 3S31 again (the Colas train) emerging from Ledbury Tunnel yesterday Date: 10/21/17 12:05 Re: Of mists, mellow fruitfulness and leaves on the line.
