Germany: Selketalbahn on November 3, 2017
Author: Milepost_130

The day of Friday, November 3, 2017 was spent in the Harz Mountains area of Germany, enjoying the operations of steam-powered trains on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (Harz Narrow Gauge Railways). This meter-gauge system is operates approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) of track, and is comprised of three systems:

• Selketalbahn (Selke Valley Railway)
• Harzquerbahn (Trans-Harz Railway)
• Brockenbahn (Brocken Railway)

Since covering all lines in one day is literally impossible, I elected to focus on the Selketalbahn. HSB 99 6001, 2-6-2T (Krupp / Essen 1875 / 1939) was operating trains between Quedlinburg and Stiege, so my photographic efforts were limited to this line.

For much of the day, the sun and clouds cooperated, resulting in some fine fall photos. Several images are attached:

• HSB 99 6001: Portrait at Quedlinburg Bahnhof (Quedlinburg railway station), junction with a DB standard gauge line, 10:20
• HSB 99 6001: Departing Sternhaus- Haferfeld, 11:06
• HSB 99 6001: Having serviced the locomotive and train, preparing to depart Gernrode, 13:44

Lokführer (Locomotive engineer): Thomas Friedrich
Lokheizer (Locomotive fireman): Arnold Erwerth
