The return of the London North Eastern Railway
Author: 86235

As has been expected Stagecoach / Virgin have handed back the keys of the East Coast franchise after losing a mint of money (in excess of £200m if some reports are to be believed). Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary, announced yesterday that a new publicly owned operation, London North Eastern Railway will take over from Virgin East Coast whilst a solution to this most troubled of franchises is sought. VEC is the third East Coast operator to throw in the towel after the expected revenue growth failed to materialise.

I await the release of a new Hitachi Azuma Intercity Express Train in imitation stained teak with interest.

A long history of franchisees over bidding to stay ahead of other bidders.

Somebody help me with ridership here. Is this the most heavily travelled mainline in the UK?
