BR Waybacks
Author: dwatry

Here are a couple more recently scanned slides from a 1980 trip around the UK.  Seems like a different universe - all loco hauled trains with a variety of rolling stock.

1) Southbound train on the East Coast mainline at Grantham led by a Deltic Class 55 on May 9, 1980.
2) Class 45 (Peak) at Leeds on April 26, 1980.  Looks like a lot of Mk 2 coaches on the train - maybe a few Mk 1s?
3) Class 50 at Penzance with a London-bound train on April 28, 1980. Lots of parcel and luggage vans in the background - I think most of that business is gone!  Class 50s were my favorite!

I know the Britts love them, but those Deltic's are very ugly locomotives.

I'm not a Brit, but I like the Deltics nonetheless  - I've always liked diesels that can hit 100mph. Also like Fairbanks-Morse locomotives, there's something intriguing about the crossover betwewen submarines and rail.  How about with the white trim?   Here's another one May 9, 1980 in Grantham.

Not all of us, I think they're pretty ugly, especially in overall blue. The original two tone green broke up the tumblehome of the bodyside. Much prefer the look of the class 50.

Nice set Duncan.

To me, each has its own character to be appreciated.  Gerry

Each to their own taste.

As well as looks, the Deltics (and Baby Deltics) had a unique sound.

I personally prefer the class 40s, 37s and 31s (latter two still in service!) and the Warships and Westerns.

Sorry for late reply. Indeed yes, it's Alycidon at Dewsbury. November 25th 1981. The other is at Gilberdyke. Chris U.K.
