Russia, May 2018 - Part 2
Author: Duna

The population of the Moscow metropolitan region is about 16 million. There is new construction everywhere, with many Soviet-era industrial and "Khrushchyovka" (3 to 5 floor Khrushchev-era apartment) buildings being replaced by new 10 to 20+ floor condos and apartments. This population and employment density that allows public transportation to succeed. But private auto use has grown immensely. Notice the automobiles in the photo series- Looks pretty much like any other western city.

1) Shelepikha Metro. This station opened within the last year serving the 8A and 11 lines.
2) Avtozavodskaya Metro. Ceiling mosaics and frieze are WWII patriotic scenes. Zero graffiti, no trash, mysterious fluids, or used syringes on the ground.
3) Vystavochnaya Metro. Another new station. Retail shops, restaurants, and offices are above.

4) Metro Museum located inside the Vystavochnaya station.
5) Kid trying out the simulator. Shoppers/riders look on.
6) Vishnyakovsky tram stop. This was the stop closest to my hotel. A pleasant residential/office neighborhood not far from the center of the city.

Dependable transportation. The Czech-built T3s are in service in many Eastern European & ex-Soviet cities. Many have been upgraded, some even have been modified for low-floor boarding. Wikipedia says over 14,000 were built between approx 1960 - 1989.

Indeed they are, I was in Daugavpils last week and they have a small fleet of regauged T3s.

Nice photo. Looks like a trolley pole operation. Are these cars narrower than normal?

Yes, Daugavpils does use a trolley pole. It's a 5' gauge so presumably the ex-Schwerin T3 cars were regauged.
