Through Poland by rail
Author: bakersfielddave

this September i travelled from Krakow to Katowice and on to Vienna via Bohumin, then  Ostrava and Brecklaw into the Czech Republic

here are a few of the trains seen

freight traffic is very intense with freight yards every few miles from small to large operations

most of the older signal towers are still extant but abandoned

if anyone can identify some of the locomotives and provide more info welcome

one surprise at Brecklaw was this train hauled by an electric loco with a steam engine [ in steam ]being transferred from somewhere to somewhere , the crew checking the motion during a brief stopover

The steam locomotive is Slovakian 4-8-2 "Albatross" #498-104.  It regularly attends railfan events throughout Europe.  I was unable to find out where it was going to or coming from.

I'll do my best. 4 is a ZSSK Cargo Skoda built 131 class. The diesel in 8 next to the EP07 electric looks like another Czech product, a CKD built T669, the universal heavy switcher of Eastern Europe (known as the ChME3 in the USSR). 9 is an SM42, a light switcher built in Poland by Fablok. The big freight electric in 13 is an ET22, built by Polish builder Pafawag. In 14 that's another CKD product, a T466.2 light switcher which can still be found all over the Czech Republic and Slovakia today (class 742 in both CD and ZSSK service). Another 131 in 15 and the six axle electric in CD Cargo livery in 16 is, I think, a Skoda built class 183. That's another T669 in 18 and the 'goggles' class in freight operator AWT livery in 22 is yet another CKD product, a class T478.3 (today class 753.7) rebuilt by CZ Loko with a Caterpillar 3512B prime mover.

I think it was either on its way too or coming back from this rail festival in České Budějovice.
