I travelled from Torino  [Turin] on the only through train from the Cuneo region to the Italian Riviera in October

a return service operates back in the afternoon

the line i  heard was destroyed at the end of WW2 and rebuilt about 40 years ago 

stations are among  others Vernante,Tende, La Brigue, Fontan - Saorge,Olivetta ,Airole

the line travels trough very rugged mountains not disimilar to the San Gabriels  and numerous tunnels and viaducts  and crosses the frontier into France then back into Italy on its southern section

a very early start had to be made to make the Cuneo connection  the train left there at 750 am and reached the coast at Ventimiiglia at 1030 am  using a set of Railcars   a distance of about 60 miles

there were a few spiral loops along the way

the french train a similar rail car unit  comes from Nice and goes to Breil or Tende ,but the trenitalia train only operates to italian points

An old sub station  perhaps reminded me of the former  Milwaukee road in Montana...

Saint Dalmas de Tende here the Italian train from Cuneo to Ventimiglia meets the northbound TER train from Nice at 920 am

the impressive station building had seen better days but glad it has been spared from demolition as has every other station along the line,

i wonder how old the water fountain was perhaps 100 years?.........

looking at the inscription at the base the numbers 23 can be seen perhaps 1923

The name Cuneo reminds of the famed artist of British hrailwaylocomorives in many books on the U.K railroads.
