That is because they are digging the Mont Ceneri Base Tunnel to eliminate the 2%+ climb in both directions between Cadenazzo(Bellinzona) and Lugano.

Thanks for the great pictures and narratuves. I still recall way back when I was a young man ( 1972) traveling by train from Zurich to Milan to enjoy the scenery. It was my first exposure to Europe. Zurich was hospital clean down to washing the steps and sidewalks in front of our hotel daily. Not a dirty window or litter anywhere. When we detrained a few hours later in Italy there was litter everywhere. the wind was blowing lose newspapers and other trash around and there wasn't a clean window in sight. I marveled at the extreme difference in the ultra clean Swiss culture vs. the opposite in Italy.

I've been back to Switzerland and Germany a number of times since but not Italy. Once cured me.

But it's a double-end unit. Why does it need to be turned?

Nice pics!  I need to stop by the European Board more often.

I particularly like the terra cotta cat detail.

Thanks for sharing,

Most common reason is that one of the Train Protection Systems isn't working in one cab. The Re484 loks have SCMT, ETCS, and Signum/Integra. The Bombardier manufactured ETCS has been giving trouble since new, and within the last few months the Re484 have been banned north of Bellinzona, since ETCS ver 2.3 is required in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. ETCS systems built by Siemens, Alstom, and Ansaldo have not been having as severe issues, and have mostly been sorted out.
