Clapham Junction UK, 1987

Clapham Junction is on the south shore of the Thames across from downtown London, and it is the spot where many lines from southern England converge to cross the river toward Waterloo and Victoria stations.

In a rainy October day in 1987, I took a series of images of the evening rush hour. In 1987, the suburban trains were a mix of slam door and newer cars. To add to the complexity of the trackwork, this is three rail electric territory.

The bridge like structure is a signal box (interlocking plant) . Since 1987, regional CTC has replaced the interlocking plants at Clapham Junction.
