Good to note- if California High Speed Rail ever is built, with electrification as planned, a similar back-up system would be needed, since PG and E and SCE (the state's power utility companies) power outages during fire season have become frequent events...

In Birmingham the Edgbaston Extension of the Midland Metro LRT via Centenary Square will have an 840m section without catenary where the trams will use battery power. Service is supposed to start next month.

Combination cat + 3rd rail + batt + diesel + turbine + steam power would improve chances of carrying coal to Newcastle.

European transit systems have been using this mode for a number of years on light rail and busses. Seattle's First Hill Steetcar, in service since 2016, has sections of its route built without overhead to utilize battery power.
