Swiss Travel Problems
Author: SOO6617

Heavy rains in Switzerland over the past couple of days are causing major disruptions to the Swiss railways. The Lötschberg Base Tunnel was closed due to flooding, and various other lines were also closed. The BLS railway has managed to get one bore of the double track section open on a limited basis allowing a single InterCity service to operate in each direction each hour.  The summit tunnel, unfortunately, is not available as the company had decided to take advantage of the lower traffic levels that are normal at this time of the year to do some heavy maintenance on that tunnel. It is expected to be several days before things return to normal.
