Covid 19 displacement activity

Crank up the scanner, dust off the slide boxes and travel back in time to 1990.

All three of these were taken in early 1990

The first is a pair of class 312 outer suburban 25kV EMUs passing Stratford in East London bound for Liverpool Street. They were among the nicest EMUs BR had and were gone well before their time, swept away by the arrival of the class 321 Dusty Bins. Unlike more modern units the 312s had a large van portion in the motor carriage, originally for parcels, mail and newspapers it was also a great place to store your bike. Nothing like that in the 321s.

Second picture is a classic diesel mechanical MU, a class 101 built in large numbers by Metropolitan Cammell in Smethwick, Birmingham. These were the last of the first generation DMU types in service, finally succumbing in 2003. Thirteen years earlier this three car set is on a Cambridge to Norwich service, passing Santon Downham in Thetford Forest.

Finally a Roarer, a class 81. One of the first generation 25kV electric locomotives, 81007 is on what was known, unofficially, as the Silcock Express, transporting Ford cars from their plant at Dagenham in East London to Garston on Merseyside in NW England. It's also passing through Stratford, an important junction and interchange in 1990 but totally transformed today, thanks to the Olympic Games, Westfield shopping centre and the Channel Tunnel rail link.

Pict 2 almost looks like it could be a painting with the telegraph poles in the background.
