I stayed a night in this neat city before taking the ferry to Isle of Man.

This is  a guess because I have never been there: Heysham.

Well hot-dang my britches if that isn't Lancaster station - on the West Coast main line between London and Glasgow.

Well I was on my way to Heysham. But there is no actual station there. Just a track along side the ferry terminal as I recall. So yes, Lancaster it is. The station looks more like a manor house than a station. The town is cool as well with including lots of interesting old buildings and a castle.

The county town of Lancashire... hence the similarity in name - famous (among other things) for it's involvement in the 'War of the Roses' with Yorkshire.
A fine/characterful historic town in a nice part of the country.
