I found this surfing a minute ago.  It is nothing catastrophic. It looks like it may be a side swipe.

That would be the Furka Base Tunnel, 15.4 km (9.6 miles) long, metre-gauge track.

The Furka Base Tunnel has a passing siding at Gehren near the middle.

Swiss tunnels sometimes have two external tracks merging into a single track just a short distance inside the tunnel. Presumably the idea is to keep the switch clear of ice and snow.  That would be one possible location for a sideswipe, other than the passing tracks within a tunnel.

After reading the brief article again, I think that the incident did not involve the Furka tunnel, but rather a shorter tunnel between the west end of the Furka and the village farther to the west, called Oberwald. A short distance from the west end of the Furka Tunnel, there's another one, just 568 metres, and trains emerging westbound from that one are very close to Oberwald station at that point. That resembles the scene in the photograph.

So my original reference to the Furka tunnel was likely in error.
