Here is Kreiensen, Germany. If memory serves, there are tracks on both sides of the station.

Indeed there are; Kreiensen is an example of a "Keilbahnhof" or "wedge station", which is situated at the confluence of two railway lines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keilbahnhof

That's probably why I was there. I changed trains I believe from a main line train (possibly ICE) to a local to get new mileage to wherever I was going. When I traveled the entire route, I recall the Guard asking why I was on that train and not the faster one. Pretty sure he wouldn't  understand the mileage collecting answer.
