Built in 1954, 78022 spent most of its working life based at Sheffield Millhouses depot until closed in January 1962. Retired in September 1966 the loco ended up in the infamous Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Wales. Rescued in 1975 it moved to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway where it was returned to service. This class of engine is a direct development by British Railways of the LMS-designed lvatt Class 2MT 2-6-0 and was built at the former LNER workshops at Darlington. By the end of production, there were 65 Standard examples in traffic working alongside 128 engines of the LMS design.[/color]

The unromantic question is why were they still building a steam engine in 1954.

I guess still hedging their bets on dieselisation.British Rail outshopped their last steam loco in 1960 I believe.Earmarket for preservation from date of construction.
