I found that a couple of days ago. It's a very good treatment of the subject.

Some so called "ghost stations" still exist where trains were allowed to pass trough the east from the west and back to the west again. Anhalter Banhnoff is another example. It was located in West Berlin but the tracks soon entered Eastern territory before ending up in the West again.

Movie "The Debt" uses such train station in the plot.

I found this too - fascinating how they managed to keep the trains running at a time when East Germany was blockading Berlin! 

While the Maple Leaf and Adirondack sit at the friendlier northern border for 2 hours. The Germans must laugh their heads off.

Years ago I knew a German guy who lived in West Berlin and had a girlfriend in the East. He said it was easier to go back and forth between East and West Berlin than it was to get in and out of the US.
