It's still Switzerland though -- Airolo is in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Date: 01/16/21 09:04 Re: Switzerland Italy old Gotthard Pass in snow Author: WP17 railsmith Wrote:

One of my memories is how the languages on the PA changed after we headed south through the Gotthard Tunnel. All annoucements north of the tunnel were in German, French, and English but then south of the tunnel Italian and English. I had been spending several weeks in Italy before meeting my buddies in Switzerland and I was surprised to start hearing announcements such as "prossima fermata" that I had been hearing all through Italy:-) WP17 > Brrr -- that looks chilly. I am not sure about Val d'Aosta, but it would not be surprising if announcements in that region were also in French. Just a bit of loosely related trivia here: there is an Italian "exclave" completely surrounded by the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is legally a part of Italy, and only Italian is spoken there. There are several of these exclaves in Europe, I believe. Date: 01/18/21 08:21 Re: Switzerland Italy old Gotthard Pass in snow Author: pennengineer colehour Wrote:
