March into April
Author: 86235

On March 31st a class 175 DMU on the 05:50 Crewe to Carmarthen leaving Abergavenny. It was just after 08:00 and the temperature was already 15C, it reached 21C by early afternoon.

On Good Friday, April 2nd, it was 10C. Transport for Wales are still operating training runs of their cascaded Mk4 stock, the hope is they will be introduced into service in June.

The daily empty steel from North to South Wales passing Pandy in the Marches.

On April 5th Freightliner operated an extra from Crewe to East Usk Yard in Newport. It turned out to be three box wagons off maintenance bound to join a set for a new flow of stone from Bristol. Better than a poke in the eye with a pointed stick I suppose.

A pair of ex-Abellio Greater Anglia 25kV class 317 EMUs on their final journey to Sims in Newport Docks for scrapping

On April 8th TfW ran a timing run from Cardiff to Holyhead and back, one of the routes the Mk 4 stock will be deployed on. Here the outbound train is passing Pontrilas, between Abergavenny and Hereford

Such variety. I really like #2 and #6 (semaphore!). I think you make your weather look better than I think it is on average.

Thanks, we do get a fair amount of rain in Wales but the last two weeks have been, for the most part, dry but cold.

Excellent photos, each and every one.  Especially like the Class 66 photos.
Thanks for another superb photo posting.
Question Photo 5 - What is the green car between #66711 and the EMU sets?

Thanks Allen, it's one of two barrier cars with compatible coupling and air brake connections. They are cars from former class 508 EMUS.

Wonderful collection Nick, very nicely composed.  I'm really happy to see that at least some of the Mk4 stock has found a home.

Nice set off photos Nick. First time I;ve seen a photo of the Simms operation. They must be busy down there. chris uk.

Sims are certainly busy at the moment, the two 317s I shot last week, a trio of Northern Pacers on Friday, two more AGA 317s from Ely yesterday and today two AGA Dusty Bins (class 321) from Clacton, here descending towards the Severn Tunnel. ROG 57312 was the power.

It feels sad, or maybe just a bit sad, to see stock you remember being introduced heading to the scrapyard, but then I realise that the memories are from 35 years ago.

I know what you mean. I've never been a great fan of the Mk 3 derived MUs, diesel or electric; cramped interiors, poor seat / window alignment, narrow doors, noisy and rough riding power cars (on the EMUs).
