An accident involving a train hiting an object on the tracks and derailing then being struck by a train on the other track happened to today near Salisbury southwest of London. No word on injuries or fatalities yet. One of the trains was operated by South West Trains, and the other by Great Western. both trains are passenger trains. The accident happened at 18:46 GMT. It is reported that the accident happened in Fisherton Tunnel. That would make rescue difficult.

No fatalities, 12 injured. Driver of the SWR (South West Railways) train had to be cut free but was able to walk of his own accord to the waiting ambulance.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) driver did the job of protecting the trains and assisting passengers.

They were both on the same (down) track. It would appear that whatever happened to the first train, the derailment took out the signalling system, either in full of partially. It's a relatively slow stretch of railway approaching Salisbury station through Fisherton Tunnel. The junction between the two lines, from Andover and London (on which the second train was travelling) and from Southampton (from where the first train had come) is just the east side of the tunnel, appropriately it's called Tunnel Junction.

It's now being reported that the second train was unable to stop at the protecting signal due to low rail adhesion from leaf mulch and the rain.

Yep, the preliminary RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) report is laying the blame firmly on adhesion problems caused by leaves on the line.

I'm glad to see South Western Railway are standing four square behind their driver.

Apparently they tried using a Class 59 to pull the stick cars from the tunnel. Found a video on Reddit where it's throwing sparks off the wheels in run 8 while bucking furiously...and getting nowhere.

The problem was not with the Class 59 but was with the morons that were misusing it.
What they really needed to do was bring in a big backhoe to dislodge the stuck car.
