European Railroad Discussion > In the Surrey HillsDate: 11/09/21 11:43 In the Surrey Hills Author: 86235 A long weekend in London gave me the opportunity to revisit some old haunts and some locations I never visited before. Last Friday was sunny until late afternoon and remarkably mild for early November.
1: A pair of Gatwick Express class 387/2s on a Victoria to Brighton fast service on the Quarry Line, just beyond Stoat's Nest Junction. There's currently no dedicated Victoria to Gatwick service, hopefully it will be reinstated as passenger numbers recover. 2: At Star Lane the Brighton Railway's Quarry Line crosses the old mainline via Redhill. It was congestion on the latter which prompted the LB&SCR to build a by-pass in 1899, and the Quarry Line was born. On the Redhill Line a Thameslink class 700 FLU (Full Length Unit) on a Bedford to Gatwick Airport service 3: 66084 on train 6V17 from Neasden to Newhaven Edited 2 time(s). Date: 11/09/21 11:51 Re: In the Surrey Hills Author: 86235 4: The Quarry Line burrows underneath the North Downs in the 2km Quarry Tunnel, a Bedford to Brighton class 700 emerges.
5: Redhill, 66524 on a train I used to see when I worked near Gatwick Airport, the 7O69 carrying rock for construction from Acton Yard in London to Crawley New Yard. 6: And finally, 69002 arriving in Redhill. These are GBRf's latest toys, former class 56s re-engined with the same EMD 710 series as the class 66. No more class 66s are permitted because of emissions legislation but it's perfectly acceptable to re-engine an existing locomotive with the same prime mover.
