ExhaustED showed some British Class 66 colours. Below you'll find some Class 66 locomotives I found at Rotterdam Waalhaven Zuid.

The Class 66 was a very common engine in the Netherlands, until we couldn't fuel red diesel any more. It was the first powerful locomotive for cross-border operations in western Europe, available for private companies. At ERSR we used these engines for trains between Rotterdam, Belgium and Germany / border stations between Germany and Poland, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Reliable, but noisy.

A very successful locomotive type, basically 2/3 of an SD70M.

The current trend in Europe is a move away from these types to dual-mode locos, with a Caterpillar prime mover as well as powerful overhead electric capability. Two locos in one!

Good thing for EMD that they are now a Caterpillar property...in a roundabout way.

Stadler Euro9000 with 2 Caterpillar engines (and a normal electric overhead wire traction installation, to get to the advertised 9 MW / 500 kN.)

It just finished certification runs in the Netherlands and will continue testing in Belgium starting soon.

Problem for most modern disc braked locomotives and DMUs in the Netherlands is our old train detection system, which has trouble detection single engines or short trains reliable enough. Some locomotives may only run on some routes with a minimal axle count. (Fun fact, we tested some of our two axle diesel hydraulics with composite brake shoes, and they detected about the same as a Class 66 on our local Alstom Jade train detection system. Electric locomotives were in a different league as the detect way better.)

I can only hope, Stadler Euro9000 detects well enough, as we could use some more options in the Dutch locomotive market.
