European Railroad Discussion > New Line or Dual Gauge btw Poland and Ukraine Considered?Date: 10/29/22 17:54 New Line or Dual Gauge btw Poland and Ukraine Considered? Author: wabash2800 Date: 10/30/22 15:15 Re: New Line or Dual Gauge btw Poland and Ukraine Considered? Author: Lackawanna484 Good luck with that project. Any new project intended to link Ukraine with the west, would likely be standard European gauge. I don't see anything designed to Russian standards getting very far in today's Ukraine.

Author: march_hare Wouldn't it be easier, engineering wise, to narrow an existing broad gauge track than broaden a standard one? Save lots of money on ties, anyway.

This proposal, if it's the same one Victor is talking about, concerns switching from Russian broad-gauge that was common in old Soviet-affiliate areas, to the 4'-8 1/2". Edited 1 time(s). But it still require a couple hundred kms of broad gauge track to get up to Bailystok/Kanaus for the broad gauge to the port of Klaipeda, Lithuania. Or up to Gdansk. Much easier, I imagine, would be to convert a couple strings of existing railcars to have variable length axles? To cross from Ukraine into Poland, then into Lithuania? Ted in OR Date: 11/29/22 06:34 Re: New Line or Dual Gauge btw Poland and Ukraine Considered? Author: Lackawanna484 That seems feasible from an engineering standpoint.
But it would require crossing the Lithuanian owned Russian supply rail line into Kaliningrad, formerly East Prussia. The Russians would undoubtedly be on edge as it is a major naval facility. Posted from Android |
