F8 48305 On The Minerals II
Author: Rattie

8F 48305 built-in 1942 at the Crewe Works of the LMS, passing Swithland Sidings on the Great Central Railway late on a cold winter's afternoon as the sun begins to set. A companion clip to last week's video that was posted in the International Strand.

Terrific video.I'm always struck by the white smoke, while American steam always belched out thick black smoke. Is that the grade of coal, better steaming qualities of British steam?

That "white smoke" isn't smoke, it's exhaust steam. The British Railways had a firing routine of "Little and Often". The goal was a nearly clear stack.

^^^^^^^^
We lived next door to a gentleman who was a Fireman on steam locomotives, I think on the Union Pacific but it's been over forty years ago. Anyways he said about the same thing. If you were firing right there should be little or no black smoke.

Nice video! The Heritage railways in Britain are amazing. Part of them look like mainlines without any imagination.

Watching the shadow of the steam plume creep along the parked rolling stock is a great element to the video. Wonderful!
