Sir Nigel Gresley on the Welsh Marches Express
Author: 86235

Yesterday Saphos Trains ran a Paignton to Shrewsbury and return Welsh Marches Express using LNER A4 Pacific 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, newly restored to early BR blue. Here it is on the return, just south of Abergavenny yesterday evening.

Really don't like the blue on these locomotives, doesn't go with the consist at all. To each their own!

It's reasonably authentic, although the blue didn't last long, the carmine and cream on the carriages lasted longer.

You've got to be kidding, it looks amazing! Very nice shot.

The blue looks really nice to me.

What's the history of the blue? Did any passenger cars use the blue livery?

Early BR livery for express passenger power. Didn't wear well.

Thanks, so that is after nationalization. Was apple green the color for the engine under LNER?

What about passenger car colours before and after?

The first A4s were silver for the 1935 Silver Jubilee express. Then there were the garter blue batch for the Edinburgh to London Coronation and Leeds to London West Riding. There was also a general service batch in green, but not apple green, a darker hue - grass green. During the war they were all painted black.

In terms of passenger stock, much of the LNER's stock was varnished teak. In early BR days they received the standard carmine and cream. Didn't sit well on LNER pre-war stock

Appreciate it. Much of my perception of British railroading was influenced by a mid-1950s Hornby Dublo catalogue.
