Berner Oberland - the movie
Author: 86235

Off home tomorrow, leaving Wengen at 09:12 (CST) we should arrive back in South Wales by 22:25 (BST). We'll take six trains, not including the transfers across Paris and London.

Here's some video footage I've put together of the various trains we've travelled on - Wengernalpbahn (WAB), Mürrenbahn (BLM), Jungfraubahn and the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB).

Thanks for posting the video compilation. First time I've heard a rack electric starting out. Different sound.

That is the longest 'BOB' trainset I've ever seen.

1. In the part of the video where the Wengernalpbahn train is departing Grindelwald and careening down the steep hill, this is a view of the valley that it is heading towards followed by going up the side of the mountain. I would not believe it if I did not see it. Sadly, I was in Grindelwald last year during the two week maintenance period where these trains were not operating. I had to ascend the mountain using the cable cars seen at the top of the image to get to the Jungfraubahn. I was able to ride the Wengernalpbahn from Kleine Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen and back to Grindelwald on the 'BOB.' I missed the Mürrenbahn altogether. Just too many trains in Switzerland to come close to riding them all in one visit.

Front nine from Grindelwald, rear five from Lauterbrunnen.

Marvelous video, Nick - thanks much. I really like the way you framed your shots to give context and the feel of the Swiss countryside - so important to appreciating these railways. Even to a going-away view of a single railcar on a small section of track, perched on the mountainside...and just a small piece of a much bigger scene. That's a shot that not many would think to make, but it's so telling about the nature of the railway, and the character of the country.

And that sequence of the Wengernalpbahn train diving down that grade just out of the station stop at Grindelwald was almost incredible. Quite spectacular. Hope you keep enjoying your trip - and thanks for sharing some of it with us.

MC
