European Railroad Discussion > Roaming around Norway: Trondheim EditionDate: 08/18/23 14:06 Roaming around Norway: Trondheim Edition Author: NMlurker I have previously covered the streetcars in Trondheim, the most northerly in the world. Unfortunately, on the weekend that I was in Trondheim, the railroad was completely shutdown in all directions for maintenance and not even parked trains were accessible for photos. The best I could do was one CargoNet shunter parked at the station. There were two of these, presumably typically used to switch the nearby intermodal yard.
1. CargoNet class SKD226 #01 0-4-0 at Trondheim. Not sure which end is the front. 2. So here is the other end. And that concludes my rail coverage of Trondheim. ![]() ![]() Date: 08/19/23 20:56 Re: Roaming around Norway: Trondheim Edition Author: gobbl3gook Nice report.
Map here. https://www.openrailwaymap.org/?style=standard&lat=63.41818866911785&lon=10.412979125976562&zoom=12 Looks like the N-S mainline bypasses the city center through a tunnel. Ted in MN Date: 08/21/23 07:50 Re: Roaming around Norway: Trondheim Edition Author: pvarlien Well, there is a bypass route there... not actually much used. Trondheim has been the northern end end of railway electrification in Norway for about 60 years, so a lot of trains tend to terminate in Trondheim.
The south leg of the wye at the west end is currently unsignaled, and the switches probably un-powered, so it doesn't see much, if any, use. Fun fact, since the Di.4 diesels were featured in another recent post: Apparently, though they look like they are double-ended, I've heard that only one cab is actually fully updated with everything required for mainline service. So they have to be turned at each end of their run between Bodø and Trondheim. For a while, the only way to turn them in Trondheim was to run them around the bypass, and back-up into Trondheim Central Station from the east end of the bypass. The locomotive maintenance facility got a brand new turntable a couple of years ago, so I assume the Di.4s get turned there now. gobbl3gook Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Nice report. > > Map here. > https://www.openrailwaymap.org/?style=standard&lat > =63.41818866911785&lon=10.412979125976562&zoom=12 > > Looks like the N-S mainline bypasses the city > center through a tunnel. > > Ted in MN Peter Varlien Heimdal, ST Date: 08/21/23 12:14 Re: Roaming around Norway: Trondheim Edition Author: DaveL Hmmm, I wonder if the stand-down was for the
electrification work on the Bodo Line north to the airport. If it is not already completed. Dave Date: 08/24/23 08:33 Re: Roaming around Norway: Trondheim Edition Author: pvarlien The electrification is not complete yet.
There may have been work related to the electrification project that week-end. Like replacing overpasses that were to low to run catenary under. Certainly other work, too.
