European Railroad Discussion > Some heritage diesels in Bavaria, GermanyDate: 11/07/23 11:38 Some heritage diesels in Bavaria, Germany Author: kbs651 Hello everybody,
the German diesel class 218 is almost on its way out, so not quite. Basically four lines are left that still see trains regularly that are run by 218s. These are from north to south, Hamburg - Westerland(Sylt), München - Mühldorf, Oberstdorf - Ulm, running under catenary to Stuttgart, and Oberstdorf - Ausgburg. The last to given are one pair of long distance trains each. Beginning early December there will be new services from Regensburg to Hof operating on two hourly headway. "Heritage units" sporting earlier paint schemes started to appear a few years ago. Since then it has kind of caught on being applied also to some electrics. I would be no means know the actual numbers of these units, but it is not only me who has an eye on them. 1 - 218 460 is kind of on the home segment of her southbound trip. Intercity 2013 is only a few minutes late passing the northward signal of Bad Grönenbach. Next stop will be Kempten. I think to remember that the line is good for 120km/h. But to me it seemed more that she was bearing down nearing 120mph. 218 460 is one of the early examples carrying heritage colors. Railfans of the time also referred to this color scheme as "throw-up-colors". Now we go and search them out, summer 2020. 2- Basically at the same location 218 155 in her classic red is in charge of the morning train from Oberstdorf to Stuttgart, IC 2012. I had a different location to shoot for this train in mind. But the railways thought differently offering a missed connection, summer 2021. 3 - A short distance further down the line it is IC 2012 again with double header of the class 218 in charge. They sport the current color scheme, one fresh, one a little washed out, fall 2023. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 11/07/23 11:57 Re: Some heritage diesels in Bavaria, Germany Author: kbs651 Second half,
4 - The DMU class 622 generally does not see service on the line from Ulm to Kempten. The DMU is seen departing the station Dietmannsreid. I only got this shot because I was late. I had intended to catch that train. 5 - 218 446 is in charge of IC 2085 to Oberstdorf. The train is seen just south of Buchloe on very hot day in August 2023. 6 - October 3, 2023, National Day, had no less than three different heritage diesels outside of the shops in Kempten to offer. The cream colored unit we had seen earlier. 218 406 just got a new coat of color applied which some of the German locomotives wore more than 20 years ago. 218 443 carries a special paint scheme worn many years ago by two class 218, and one class. They were designed for the Touristik-Zug. A good number of coaches had the same paint scheme applied. The times we bashed the 2350 Munich to Buchloe after an evening on the beer was fantastic. Front coach behind the 218 with the windows open listening to the thrash (always louder in the dark) was intense. We’d get off in Kaufering and crash out in the BnB and do the pair over to Lindau the following morning., Rinse and repeat. Great times. Englishman in America Posted from iPhone |
