EMD and GE Locos Working Hard Across the Pond
Author: exhaustED

A beautiful sunny evening today, just begging for the camera to get out... so here are a couple of well-loaded intermodal trains heading north along the UK's West Coast main line, just entering Rugeley Trent Valley station, north of Birmingham. The first is a Freightliner (G and W) EMD class 66 working from London to Liverpool and the second is a Freightliner GE class 70 heading from Southampton to Crewe (and ultimately Glasgow behind electric traction).

Ha ha, the vast majority of people would agree with you! But i really prefer the GE class 70s; they're more powerful, they sound much better and they're very distinctive with their single windshield and hood with access doors design. Each to their own, the 66s are very successful and I do still like them also...

The GE's look like a bunch of modules that were slammed together with not a care about appearance.

I think appearance isn't often of very high priority when lfreight ocomotives are being designed; function is what they're about. In my opinion the 66s are particularly bland and conservative,2 windows, no snowplough and a cheap-looking corrugated flank with a high waistline that exposes lots of quite unsightly pipework etc.
