European Railroad Discussion > Milan Trams Part 2 - the 4600/4700 carsDate: 08/12/24 19:07 Milan Trams Part 2 - the 4600/4700 cars Author: dwatry After the Peter Witts (Part 1 of this series), the next oldest cars operating on ATM's tram system in Milan are the 4600 and 4700 series cars, which are articulated cars with 2 sections. These were built 1955-1960 by Stanga and Breda, and originally came in two varieties. The 4600s had air brakes, and the 4700s were built as all-electric cars. They are very reminisicent of late PCC cars when you ride them - including how the operator's controls and cabin are set up. Some of the 4700s have been rebuilt, with what I assume is an air conditioning system (any confirming or correcting info appreciated), and these cars have a large bulge over the front of the car. Only 33 of these cars were built, and so they are somewhat hard to find on the ATM system. I caught them on the 2, 3 and 19-lines.
1) A rebuilt 4700 on the 3-line coming through the city gate at Porta Ticinese - a very impressive structure! 2) Another rebuilt 4700 on the 2-line on Via Torino at Carrobio. 3) Another 4700 same place and line. The 2 and 3-lines diverge at this point, so this is a good interesction to catch these cars, as they run on 2 lines here. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/12/24 19:27 by dwatry. 5) Rebuilt 4700 on the 19-line at Piazza Ascoli. 6) Rebuilt 4700 on the 19-line on Viale Piave, on a portion of the line shared with the 9-line. 8) Rebuilt 4700 at Piazzale Baracca. Ostensibly this was supposed to be 10-line service, but trams were coming by signed for 2 or 3 different lines, so hard to tell what was going on this day! If I recall correctly, the location was on Via Cesare Cantu--just a couple blocks west of the Piazza del Duomo. The building behind the streetcar was, at the time, the headquarters of Luxottica Group.
