Rails Around Northern Italy
Author: dwatry

Somewhat random shots from various outings during our month in Milan:

1)  SBB Class 193 Vectron on an intermodal train heading for the Gotthard Pass line in Monza (IT).    A Trenord Class 521 EMU is heading off in the distance to Milano Porta Garibaldi.
2)  Trenord Class 464 on a regional working approaching Monza.
3)  TILO (jointly owned by SBB and Trenord) Class 524 approaching Monza.

4) Mercitalia Class 405 on a southbound freight on the Gotthard line in Monza, emerging from the tunnel under the city center.
5) Trenord Class ATR 125 DMU southbound into Monza.
6) Trenord Class 711 EMU on an S13 working in Pavia.  Pavia is a small but interesting city with a huge cathedral about 30 miles south of Milan - makes for a very nice day trip.

7)  Trenitalia Class 426 on the Ceres line at Venaria, in the Torino region.  The Ceres line used to be a separate line from the other FS lines in the Torino region that terminated at the now abandoned Stazione Dora.  It was integrated into the overall network when the line through Torino Porta Susa was expanded.
8)  Trenitalia ETR Class 400 high-speed Frecciarosa set at Rho-Fiera on the northside of Milan, on the line to Torino.
9)  EVM Class 191 Vectron on a northbound freight at Rho-Fiera, headed for the Simplon Pass and Switzerland.

10)  Trenord Class 711 on a northbound working at Rho-Fiera.
11)  Trenitalia Class 426 EMU on the branch at Alba.     These trains provide an hourly service to Torino.
