Tram Tuesday: Innsbruck, Austria Edition
Author: NMlurker

Innsbruck, Austria has a fairly extensive network of meter-gauge trams, most of which run in the streets of Innsbruck as trams do. But there are two particularly scenic lines that leave the city and climb the hills south and southeast of Innsbruck. The longest of these is the 'STB' line, Stubaitalbahn, to Fulpmes, which features tunnels, viaducts, and horseshoe curves. The other scenic line is the '6' line to Igls ('eagles'), which features multiple horseshoe curves climbing through a forested hillside. I was only able to photograph at the two termini, the scenic bits being purely experiential.

1. All of the trams are now modernized and homogenized. Here is one of the newer lines, 5, with destination of Technik West to the west of Innsbruck near the airport. A second tram is close behind. This is the Hauptbahnhof station adjacent to the main train station.

2. This line 3 tram has presumably come from Amras with a destination of Anichstrasse in central Innsbruck.

3. Notably free of advertising, this STB line tram has arrived at the attractive and well-kept station of Fulpmes. I am still not certain whether my IVB (operator) day pass covered this line all the way to the end but I was never checked. The one-way fare back to town was shown as more than what my pass cost so I do wonder.

4. Another view at Fulpmes showing the multiple tracks and a bit of the vintage carbarn. Service frequency may have been as low as one train every two hours but I do not actually remember.

5. The line 6 tram at Igls. The tracks in the grass are part of a turning loop that is no longer needed with the modern bi-directional trams.

6. Another view of the tram at Igls showing a destination of Claudiaplatz in Innsbruck.

Nice set, not been to Innsbruck since 2008. Those Bombardier trams were new then.
