European Railroad Discussion > Douro Valley Train in Portugal

There is a rail passenger service in Portugal that runs from Porto up the beautiful Douro River Valley.

Most service is provided by DMUs and a few runs are handled by locomotive pulled trains of rebuilt Swiss cars from the 1940s.

Which runs are currently handled by locomotive pulled trains?  The information I have (8:30am and 1:30pm from Porto) is probably out of date.

I also read that there are plans to electrify part of the line and wonder how that is coming along.

I took the 920AM train from the Sao Bento station in April 2023.  It was the vintage equipment with locomotive.  Went as far as Pinhao.  Stayed in this lovely small town about 40 minutes and caught a return vintage back to Porto.  What a blast!  I've ridden trains in most of Europe(adding Poland in June) and it ranks higher than any of my high speed trips.  Do it!

On summer Saturdays and Sundays (June to September) there's a historic steam train from Regua to Tua and back. Leaves Regua at 15:30 (connecting with the IR868 13:10 ex-Porto Sao Bento) returning at 18:26 (connecting with IR876 18:39 to Porto Sao Bento).

CP's class 1400 diesel locos (English Electric/Sorefame 1967) on the IR services in the Duoro Valley attract hordes of British railfans.

Gary Thomas from North Wales is a frequent visitor to the Duoro Valley, these are from a visit last month. The English Electric/Sorefame class 1400 are the draw.
