I'm sensing a theme here: Modern EMUs and DMUs in Italy
Author: NMlurker

It did not take long while travelling in Italy to recognize a theme in the naming of the various fleets of EMUs and DMUs, oddly, mostly using English words.

1. Caravaggio EMU seen at Venice on April 30, 2025, labeled 'Rock.' Built by Hitachi Rail Italy and first entered service in 2019.

2. Coradia Meridian DMU at Siena on May 1, 2025, labeled 'Minuetto' (I'll say Italian for the French Minuet). Built by Alstom.

3. Pesa Atribo ATR 220 DMU at Siena on May 1, 2025, labeled 'Swing.' Built by Pesa SA of Poland.

4. HTR 312 three-mode hybrid at Siena on May 1, 2025, labeled 'Blues.' Built by Hitachi, featuring electric, diesel and battery modes. We went west from Florence on an electrified line to Empoli at which point the diesel engines started up and we traveled south on the non-electrified line to Siena and reversed the process on the return.

5. ETR 425 Coradia Meridian EMU at Salerno on May 9, 2025, labeled 'jazz.' Built by Alstom in the mid-2010s.

6. ETR 104 Coradia Smart EMU at Taormina Giardini (Sicily) on May 9, 2025, labeled 'pop.' Built by Alstom starting in 2019.

The last one does not appear to be a real word but I will take it as a variation on the Italian composer Vivaldi. Also, neither an EMU or a DMU, but double-decker coaches, locomotive-hauled in push-pull mode. I don't know if I missed any of the musical genres.

7. 'Vivalto' coaches seen at Venice on April 30, 2025. Built by Hitachi Rail Italy.

8. Another view of a 'Vivalto' coach showing the three musical notes in the colors of the Italian flag. Seen at Roma Termini on May 6, 2025.
