Marginal Grab Shot Monday: Italy Edition
Author: NMlurker

As this was not a railfan trip in the traditional sense, I sometimes had to resort to grab shots, sometimes from a moving train, to document interesting things that I saw.

1. Parked in Empoli were these two well-worn D445-class diesels of the Italian state railway (FS). Wikipedia suggests that this class is in service but maybe not these two.

2. At three different main stations (Florence, Rome, and Naples) there was one of these parked. This one was at the main station in Florence, Firenze Santa Maria Novella. This is a Vossloh-designed, German-built, G2000BB-class diesel hydraulic owned by Ferrovie Emilia Romagna (FER). FER is a private railway in the Bologna area but I am guessing they may also do contract switching (or locomotive leasing?). Note the small "MaK" above the cab window for builder Maschinenbau Kiel GmbH.

3. And here is the one at Roma Termini in considerably cleaner condition. The one in Naples (no photo) was in a solid red scheme.

4. A popular modern shunter across Europe is the Vossloh DE18-class shown here at the ferry terminal in Villa San Giovanni. The locomotive is leased by the freight arm of the Italian state railway, Mercitalia, sublettered Shunting and Terminal. I believe there was another one on the Messina side (Sicily), possibly preparing to load freight cars onto the recently arrived ferry.

Cool Shots!

I believe the G2000BB locos are owned by private high speed train operator Italo and are used to rescue their trains if they break down
