Trondheim, Norway railway tunnel under the city
Author: GN1969

In Trondheim, Norway there is a long tunnel under the city on a line bypassing the central station. It is called the Stavne-Leangenbanen. Is this bypass line still being used?

Google street view from the road over the north portal shows vans/workers from a Norwegan tunnel infrastructure company (BMO) plus what looks like some kind of work train down on the track.

Yes, still used by a few freight trains daily, plus
some commuter trains run as far as Lerkendal
station but not through the tunnel. Interestingly
most of the route was built by the German
Wehrmacht during World War II, however the
war ended before they could complete the
tunnel. The Norwegians finally finished the
tunnel and the line in 1957 when freight
traffic from the Nordlandsbanen grew to the
point were Trondheim Sentral became too
congested.
