European Railroad Discussion > Italy to Proceed With Straits of Messina BridgeDate: 08/09/25 09:15 Italy to Proceed With Straits of Messina Bridge Author: milepost20 After decades of debate it looks like Italy is now going to proceed with a rail/road
bridge at the Straits of Messina. Although only 3.3 km across Sicily and Calabria are on two separate tectonic plates that are constantly moving creating huge engineering challenges. From the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c80d74v0e4lo The bridge will be single deck with the double track railway line in the middle flanked by three road traffic lanes in each direction(two for traffic and one emergency/service lane). It will be the longest suspension bridge in the world with a projected completion date of 2032-2033. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/09/25 09:30 by milepost20. It would be the best amusement park ride ever.

The bridge will surely mean the service's demise. That said, the bridge will probably be a big economic boost to Sicily, which has always had its economic and social challenges. And probably to some extent also for the rest of southern Italy.
