European Railroad Discussion > Karjaa/Karis, Finland, 5/1/04Date: 09/13/25 05:00 Karjaa/Karis, Finland, 5/1/04 Author: GPutz This is about 40 railroad miles southeast of Salo, about 70 railroad miles from Turku, and about 50 railroad miles west of Helsinki.
1. I arrived from Salo on train IC2 134 led by Sr2 #3201. 2. Tk3 2-8-0 #1170, a light wood-fired freight engine built by Lokomo in Tampere in 1953, was on display. A total of 161 Tk3s were built between 1927 and 1953, the last ones were retired in 1975, and 38 are preserved: 35 in Finland, 2 in Britain, and 1 in St. Petersburg, Russia. 3. 5 & 6. a w/b train of mostly Russian auto racks, probably from Riihimäki by way of Hyvinkää to Hanko, led by Dv12 #2707. There is a non-electrified, freight-only line between Hyvinkää and Karjaa (bypassing Helsinki) which continues between Karjaa and Hanko with passenger service, see below. Gerry Edited 1 time(s). There was a convenient café in it. Out of view, under the trees behind the station on this balmy 60°F “May Day” were the last remnants of winter’s snow.
8. This is the view from the driveway above the station. 9. There were no tracks into the roundhouse, but the turntable seemed to be in use, probably for turning MoW equipment.
