Norwegian Di 4 Diesels to be Replaced
Author: milepost20

The Di 4 class of diesels have been covered here on TO several times and are now facing
retirement.  Five examples(651-655) were built by Henschel in 1980 and have been used for
years on the Nordland line on Trondheim to Bodø passenger trains.

Powered by an EMD 16-645 rated at 3300 hp they have had reliability problems in recent
years seriously impacting the service on the line.  A fatal derailment last year that
damaged beyond repair the 653 exacerbated the problem.

Norwegian private operator Grenland Rail will now make available for lease four Stadler
EuroDual locomotives to permanently replace the Di 4's.  These class 159 units are dual
mode electric/diesels producing 8000 hp in electric mode and 4000 hp as diesels.  The lease
will take effect in a few months.

Thanks for posting this.  My younger son and I had a good n/b ride behind one of these 5/30/12.  Gerry
