European Railroad Discussion > Fall Euro Trip Part 2 - Surprise Tram System in Vitoria-GasteizDate: 11/10/25 20:55 Fall Euro Trip Part 2 - Surprise Tram System in Vitoria-Gasteiz Author: dwatry One of the pleasant surprises of this European trip was discovering the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Not only is it a really nice, lively city - it has a 2-line tram system that I did not even know existed! The system was opened in 2008 and is a metre-gauge system, like the Bilbao system, which opened in 2002. Both the Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Bilbao systems are operated under the Euskotren Tranbia brand of the Basque region.
1) A 500-series CAF Urbos-2 series tram on the central corridor. 2) A 500-series tram meets a 600-series tram. 3) 600-series tram on the main pedestrian area in the center. I've never been to Portugal or Spain. I appreciae your photos.
If you want to see all the tram systems in the world, you can poke around on openrailmap.org they jump out, since they are in pink. That's not to say that you *should* -- making random discoveries in the world is fun, too! https://openrailwaymap.org/?style=standard&lat=42.843562530031726&lon=-2.6695919036865234&zoom=13 https://opentopomap.org/#map=14/42.84558/-2.65646 They also reallh jump out in "pocket earth" an iPhone app that uses openstreetmap data. It highlights rail lines much better than opentopomap itelf. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/42.84740/-2.67929&layers=C Openstreetmap itself is a little disappointing in it ability to show tram lines...
