Fall Euro Trip Part 4 - Mostly CP's Lisboa-Porto mainline
Author: dwatry

After Porto, I spent a day and a half railfanning mostly along CP's Lisboa-Porto mainline, with an overnight in Aveiro.  I particularly wanted to photograph the Intercity (IC) trains that are scheduled every 2 hours on this route, in between the Alfa Pendolinos.  The IC trains are loco-hauled with the Class 5600s, which are Siemens/Sorefame products from 1993-95.  The real treat, however, is the rolling stock for the IC trains, which is mostly corrugated stainless steel Corail stock, built in 1985, and run mostly in 8-car trainsets.  I haven't been able to find a reference, but I assume they were built by Sorefame, as Sorefame seems to have built all the other corrugated stainless steel stock that CP has had over the years.  Corrections welcomed if anyone has better info.

1) IC #720 coming SB through Pampilhosa, which is a junction with the Guarda line.
2) AP (Alfa Pendular) #123 coming north through Pampilhosa.  These are similar to CD's Pendolinos in the Czech Republic.
3) 2240-class EMU on a local making station stop at Pampilhosa.

7)  Southbound 3400-series EMU at Avanca.  These are Bombardier/Siemens products from about 2002.
8)  Northbound 3400-series meets a southbound baretable Captrain freight train at Ovar.
9)  Southbound IC train #722 at Ovar.

11)  NB EMU on a local at Valega.
12) SB IC #620 at Salreu.

13)  Next day's SB IC #730 - seen here at Estarreja in the fog.
14)  And a little farther off the beaten track - here's IC #511 arriving Guarda from Lisboa, coming off the Linha Beira Alta, very close to the Spanish border.  This line was closed for about 2-1/2 to 3 years for rehab and just reopened right before we got to Portugal.

Very nice! Those Captrain freight locos are EMD powered and sound pretty good!

All these trains are single-level, as opposed to the many doubles you see in France (TGV and local), Finland, etc etc. Are doubles not used anywhere in Portugal?

When I was there in 2014 the Fertagus services across the Tagus in Lisbon were bi-levels. I can't imagine that's changed.

Could be double-decks in Lisbon.  I did not make it down to the Lisbon area.
