European Railroad Discussion > A foreigner visits Duffield, UK and the Ecclesbourne Valley RwyDate: 12/18/25 09:36 A foreigner visits Duffield, UK and the Ecclesbourne Valley Rwy Author: NMlurker Duffield is just a seven minute ride north of Derby and the southern terminus of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, a heritage line with both steam and diesel power. The line runs to their base of operations in Wirksworth, nine miles to the north-northwest. I was very impressed by their operation.
1. Upon arrival in Duffield I was evidently able to detrain and get up on the pedestrian bridge in time to capture my train leaving. Note the completely different EMR Regional paint scheme. 2. As I was quite early relative to the departure time of the first Ecclesbourne Valley train, I hung around the station to capture some of the Sunday morning action. Here a two-unit EMR Regional DMU arrives southbound. 3. And departs. Date: 12/18/25 09:45 Re: A foreigner visits Duffield, UK and the Ecclesbourne Valley R Author: NMlurker 4. Now over at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway station, the first train of the day arrives from Wirksworth.
5. Power for the day's train is this 0-6-0T steamer, "The Duke," seen making its run around move for the return to Wirksworth. 6. The weather is improving and the crowd is filling the platform as the second train of the day has returned from Wirksworth. I would say that by far most passengers were making a round trip from Wirksworth, not from Duffield as I did. 10. I did not have a schedule for the through trains and there were no signals in view so one had to be quite alert to capture one of the through trains. Here is one of the longer distance EMR DMU sets northound (going away). 11. And finally, my two-unit EMR Regional DMU that would take me back to Derby. A most enjoyable day.
