European Railroad Discussion > A tourist rides the Welsh Highland RailwayDate: 12/21/25 10:10 A tourist rides the Welsh Highland Railway Author: NMlurker The Welsh Highland Railway puts the narrow in narrow gauge at 1' 11 1/2" and runs from Porthmadog on the south end to Caernarfon (Ka-NAR-von) on the north end in northwestern Wales. We boarded at Beddgelert in the rain, rode northbound in the rain, and arrived at Caernarfon likely in the rain.
1. My train arrives at Beddgelert behind this beast of a South African Garratt. This train is the Harbourmaster. 2. This shot is so bad that I like it. Taken through the window of my train as we meet a southbound train at Rhyd Ddu. I am guessing that is another Garratt but in proper Welsh Highland Railway livery. 3. The most scenic part of the journey was climbing a grade in the vicinity of the Mount Snowdon foothills. Date: 12/21/25 10:14 Re: A tourist rides the Welsh Highland Railway Author: NMlurker 4. A little farther on the climb. The two Pullman cars are First Class cars.
5. Upon arrival at Caernarfon, site of a rather famous castle. 6. That is one crazy design of a steam locomotive. Date: 12/22/25 06:01 Re: A tourist rides the Welsh Highland Railway Author: jcaestecker I sure like your 'bad' one. Thanks for the ongoing series. It's most enjoyable.
