European Railroad Discussion > Nordhausen steam train ends March 1.Date: 01/12/26 16:06 Nordhausen steam train ends March 1. Author: LTCerny On the Harz Mountain Railroad in Germany (Harzquerbahn), the last steam train to/from Nordhausen is planned to be dieselized with the schedule change March 2. This will leave no steam trains scheduled south of the junction with the Sekeltalbahn at Eisfelder Talmulde, and only one steam-powered round trip from there to Drei Annen Hohne. The existing schedule has the steam locomotive overnighting at Nordhaussen, so this change will mean the steam facilities there will no longer be needed. Many steam-powered trains are still scheduled to run on the Wenigerode-Drei Annen Hohne-Brocken section of the line after the schedule change.

Author: F40PHR231 Here's a pic of the aforementioned steam train to Nordhausen making a stop at Eisfelder, taken last spring. This route a little closer to civilization to the south of Eisfelder not only sees diesel-powered service, but also shares track with battery-powered light-rail / trams. Pretty interesting combination of services. For those perusing this post, Eisfelder is also the stop where steam trains from different parts of the Harz range meet, exchange passengers, and depart at the same time drag racing each other up the grades out of town, a whole 'nother experience itself!
