10 days in Sicily
Author: 86235

Sitting at Catania Airport waiting for our flight home after a 10 day break on Sicily, escaping the winter weather in the UK. We stayed in Taormina on the Ionian coast, between Catania and Messina. Rode a few Trenitalia EMUs, Taormina to Catania and back and Taormina to Siracusa and back. We also had a quick look at the narrow gauge Circumetnea Railway as well.

A Trenitalia IC service from Siracusa to Roma Termini. The train will ride the train ferry across the Straits of Messina and will be coupled to the section from Palermo for the journey to Rome.

This is an ETR104 EMU built by Alsthom, and christened POP. They're OK for short journeys but after two hours on a vinyl seat (Taormina to Siracusa) the novelty starts to wear off.

One of the Circumetnea NEWAG (Poland) built DMUs.

I saw a few freight trains, behind Mercitalia 37 year old E652 B-B-B electric locos.

I also took some video footage on my phone.
