European Railroad Discussion > DB's New Talgos Under Diesel PowerDate: 03/04/26 08:00 DB's New Talgos Under Diesel Power Author: milepost20 Deutsche Bahn is bringing into service 60 new 17 car Talgo trains for intercity services
marketed as the ICE-L(the L for low level boarding). To haul the trains in non-electrified territory they have ordered 21 Siemens class 248.5 dual-modes that operate as a conventional electric under the wires but are also equipped with a 16 cyl. MTU diesel prime mover. Think of them as a German version of New Jersey Transit's Bombardier dual-modes. The 248 506 is seen on a test run between Hamburg and Westerland in a photo from the site RailColorNews. Maybe Amtrak and Siemens could have come up with a similar approach to haul the new Airo fleet in the northeast rather than the unproven Charger diesel + pantograph- equipped Auxiliary Power Vehicle concept.
