European Railroad Discussion > Fun with Funiculars Friday: Porto, PortugalDate: 06/19/26 10:34 Fun with Funiculars Friday: Porto, Portugal Author: NMlurker Right by the Ponte Luís I bridge is the Funicular dos Guindais. It is interesting for being extremely steep at the bottom but leveling out at the upper half so the cars adjust their angle during the trip and have an accordion skirt.
1. A car descends the steep part. The upper half is in a tunnel. 2. The cars meeting at the halfway point with the skirt fully compressed. 3. A different angle and closer look at one of the cars at full extension of the leveling mechanism. The noise during the descent of the second car is not the funicular but a passing tram on the bridge just feet behind me.
